Fallacy Worksheet #4

If the statement isn't a fallacy write “no fallacy”. Otherwise if the statement is a fallacy, write which one(s). Some statements may contain more than one fallacy.

The list of fallacies I'm drawing from are:

Begging the Question
Wishful thinking
Appeal to ignorance
Appeal to consequences
Appeal to the masses
Appeal to tradition
Appeal to force
Appeal to authority
Equivocation
Hasty Generalization
False Dichotomy
Ad Hominem
Straw Man
Slippery Slope

Everyone knows that Eskimos have over 100 words for snow.

A single spark in a forest, if that forest is very dry, can ignite a small fire which can in turn ignite a bigger fire until finally a firestorm, a wildfire erupts and consumes everything as far as the eye can see.

I don't think the picture of my opponent standing with Jane Fonda at a protest rally is real. We know that my opponent went to many of the same kinds of rallys as Ms. Fonda did, but we have no evidence of a direct association. Considering my opponents position on the war in Vietnam, it is not hard to understand why people might find it easy to believe that my opponent associated with Jane Fonda, but we do not, at this time, believe that this is the case.

Would you criticize African Americans for opposing the Klan or Jews for opposing the Nazi's? As Scientologists, our opposition to the Cult Awareness Network is exactly the same thing.

I read the horoscope every morning, because you never know. They could be on to something. A lot of people read the horoscope, otherwise it wouldn't be in the paper. How could that many people be wrong? There really must be something to it.

We investigated rumors that the leader of the Cult Awareness Network was a a topless dancer, but when we saw what she looked like we determined that this was unlikely, that she probably was not a topless dancer. It is possible that we were wrong, that maybe she is a topless dancer, but we can't verify that at this time.

I've never actually met a black person, but I see them on the news all the time. It's always the same thing on the news too, crime and more crime. Sometimes a story about puppies, but usually just crime. I think there must be something fundamentally wrong with them if they are always involved in so much crime that I only see them on the news.

Why, you ask, is teen sex wrong? I would ask what is so right about teen sex. When I think about the nationwide epidemic of teens having sex, it turns my stomach. Our nation is on a slide towards ever more depravity and tens having sex is just one more sign of these times. We are surely the minority, the vanguard, the few who are stalwart in their opposition, their defiance of this trend towards degenerate degradation.

You shouldn't have excused that student from lab. I don't care if he was sick. You don't know if he was faking. If you let one exception slide, it will open a can of worms and every student will think they deserve the same exception for their own particular circumstance.

Catholics don't believe in God, they believe in Mary. How ridiculous is that?

Watch it! Saying these things seems to mean you are believing the unthinkable. You depend on our generosity and that generosity can easily end. You should listen to my advice and tred lightly and get in the right frame of mind.

How arrogant are you to think you know better than your parents, your church, your Bible and your God? You don't know. You don't really know anything. You should just accept what is obviously before you. If you humble yourself and accept that the wisdom of God is by far greater than the wisdom of man and accept what we tell you, us the chosen of God, then you may find peace and everlasting life. Believe in me and you shall be truly free.

It's true that I supplied faulty equipment for airplanes, but it can't matter. The world would not punish the people flying in those planes for my mistakes.

Everyone knows that Elvis didn't die that day. Elvis is still with us, walking among us.

We've always married our daughters off before their 17th birthday. That's who we are. It's what we do. Who are you to tell us what we should and shouldn't do? This is our culture and you should respect it.

I don't care what the evidence says. I don't care that we've only know each other for a short time. I love my husband and I'm going to stand by my husband no matter what. I know that he couldn't be the rapist, because I love him. (I borrowed heavily from Law and Order: SVU for that one)

He's Arabic and a young man. We don't know that he isn't a terrorist, so we should be cautious. We should hold him until we can verify that he isn't a terrorist.
